How to Open an MPG/MPEG file on Movie Maker

Summary: The article shows you an easy workaround for editing MPEG files in Windows Movie Maker. Let's find it out here!

Sometimes we may come across this problem - the videos that we have downloaded from online video sites, ripped from DVD in MPEG format are not supported by Windows Movie Maker. How to make MPEG files compatible with Windows Movie Maker so that we can load the video files in for editing or playing? Here, we need a workable way to convert MPEG/MPG to Windows Movie Maker compatible video formats.

MPG (also referred to as MPEG) is the acronym for the Moving Picture Experts Group, which is a widely used format today. The videos contained within the .mpg files are compressed video files. These files are compressed to allow users to download the files more quickly without sacrificing much of the picture quality in the video itself. But the limit is that MPEG format is not ideal for editing in NLE. To encode and import MPEG to Windows Movie Maker, Brorsoft Video Converter is the best recommendation.

With it, you can fast convert MPG to WMV/AVI , Windows Movie Maker supported videos with optimized settings. Meanwhile, this video app enables you to change MPG to editable format for Pinnacle Studio, Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, Cyberlink PowerDirector, Avid Studio, Magix Movie Edit Pro and more other NLE. Download it now and follow the steps below to make Movie Maker accept your MPG videos.

How to Convert MPEG for Windows Movie Maker

1. After installation, run this MPEG to Windows Movie Maker converter and click File > Add Video Files or simply drag the .mpg movies you want to convert to the program for conversion. Added videos will appear on the left item bar with thumbnails.

2. Since Windows Movie Maker only supports WMV, ASF, MPG (MPEG-1) and AVI (DV-AVI), you can choose one format of them. Here I recommend “HD Video” > “WMV HD(*.wmv)” as the output video format.

Tip: If the default settings do not fit you requirement, you can click “Settings” icon to and enter “Profile Settings” panel to adjust video size, bit rate, frame rate, sample rate and audio channels.

3. Simply click the "Convert" button to start encoding MPEG to WMV, everything else will be automated. If you have added quite a bunch of video files, it would take some time to convert. In such case, you can click Option and tick the box “Shut down the computer after conversion”.

After the conversion, click “Open” to locate the result videos and then you can import the converted MPG files to Windows Movie Maker for editing via its “Import video” option.
