Get Final Cut Pro to work with Sony F55 4K XAVC files beautifully

Summary: The article shows you the best workaround for editing Sony F55 4K video in Final Cut Pro 7/X by transcoding 4K XAVC to FCP native editing format - Apple ProRes.

I’ve been researching possible workflows for Sony F55 and Final Cut Pro . As you know, Sony PMW-F55 is a professional-grade camera with an 8.9-megapixel 4K-enabled image sensor. With Sony F55, you can record Full HD XAVC clips 240fps RAW 2k and 60fps RAW 4K recoding onto the AXS-R5. However, I found many users complained the problems when trying to edit Sony F55 4K XAVC footage in FCP 7/X.

Regardless of the NLE, I think editing in 4K is a potential exercise in frustration. Plus, Sony’s XAVC format employs MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 level 5.2, the highest picture resolution and frame rate video compression codec based on industry standards. It is not the preferred format by Apple Final Cut Pro. To edit Sony 4k XAVC footage in Final Cut Pro 7 or FCP X smoothly, the easy workaround is to change the file extension from "XAVC" to "ProRes", which is a friendly format supported by FCP.

Through multiple testing, we found Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac can be used as a professional Sony XAVC Converter Mac under OS X Leopard (10.5), Snow Leopard (10.6), Lion (10.7), Mountain Lion (10.8), Mavericks (10.9). The program comes with several optimized format for Final Cut Pro, which enables you to transcode Sony F55 raw footage to ProRes 422, ProRes 422 HQ, for using in Final Cut Pro X or FCP 6/7 directly. Just download it and follow the tutorial below guide to achieve your goal.

Guide: Convert Sony F55 4K to ProRes 422 for Final Cut Pro

Step 1. Launch the program and click the "Add" button to load Sony F55 XAVC files for converting.

Step 2. Click on the “Format” and you will get a dropdown menu and then select Final Cut Pro > Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov), which is the best format for Final Cut Pro.

Step 3. In case the default settings do not fit your requirement, you can click “Settings" button and enter “Profile Settings" panel to adjust video size, bit rate, frame rate, sample rate and audio channels. Personally I didn't keep the original 4k resolution for my Final Cut, but the video app can help you keep original 4K if you need.

Step 4. After above settings, hit “Convert” button to start transcoding Sony F55 4K XAVC to ProRes for directly importing to Final Cut Pro.

After a quick conversion, you can click the Open icon to locate the converted ProRes MOV files. Now import your new ProRes files into FCP 7/X for editing perfectly.
